“It’s all new, all screen, and all powerful.”, said Apple, regarding the new iPad Pro they launched in October 2018.

Apple took a big leap forward of evolution on iPad Pro, upgraded both the appearance and its functionalities with the “most advanced technology”. There are 2 models available which are the 11-inch and 12.9-inch tablets. These tablets have a similar design from an iPhone XS-style with an edge-to-edge new Liquid Retina display, slim bezels all the way around, and no Home button installation. The display supports a wide range of color, including True Tone for adjusting to the ambient light. The lack of Home button which was initially designed for bio-metric authentication is no longer applicable. Touch ID has been replaced with Face ID features by a TrueDepth camera systems. Its function works in both portrait and landscape orientation, convenienting users with quicker unlock security. On top of these newly implanted characteristics, the new iPad Pro (3rd Generation) is also competent in the integration with the Smart Keyboard Folio and second-generation Apple Pencil.

Subtle bending issue in the aluminum chassis

The new 11” and 12.9” iPad Pro models are ultra slim at 5.9 mm, with Apple eliminating the headphone jack. Both iPad Pro models use aluminum chassis, featuring flat and round edges.  However, according to Macrumors, new iPad Pro users found that there have been some bending issues happened to these aluminum chassis. Initially, Apple’s VP of hardware engineering DanRiccio sent an email to a user who just bought an iPad, telling him the iPad Pro meets Apple’s high quality standards for design and manufacturing:

“Relative to the issue you referenced regarding the new iPad Pro, its unibody design meets or exceeds all of Apple's high quality standards of design and precision manufacturing. We've carefully engineered it and every part of the manufacturing process is precisely measured and controlled.

Our current specification for iPad Pro flatness is up to 400 microns which is even tighter than previous generations. This 400 micron variance is less than half a millimeter (or the width of fewer than four sheets of paper at most) and this level of flatness won't change during normal use over the lifetime of the product. Note, these slight variations do not affect the function of the device in any way.

Again, thanks for reaching out and I hope the above explanation addresses your concerns.”

Subsequently, Apple further explained via a support document, suggesting that some LTE iPad Pro models with antenna splits may have "deviations in flatness" that are more visible from certain viewing angles during normal use. Apple claims the bending is normal and unfortunately it is part of the side effect during the manufacturing process. The bend is result from a cooling process involving the iPad Pro’s metal and plastic components during manufacturing. They believe this is not a defect, and says that the problem will not get worse over time nor it will affect its performance and functions.

Based on the reviews and Apple’s response to “not a defect”, Apple offers iPad Pro buyers (who purchase directly from an Apple Store) a return policy within 14-day after purchase. So here comes to the question of how should users protect their Apple iPad Pro after the 14th day of purchase? How can they prevent this damage if users are transporting it everywhere everyday?
