iPhone XS Max Durability

Apple claims iPhone Xs Max and Xs to have “the most durable glass in the world”. However, this doesn’t make the device completely shatterproof. YouTuber TechSmartt drop tested the iPhone X, Xs Max and Xs from three loosely defined heights: pocket height, head height, and a roughly 10 feet height. All phones survived the pocket height drop without suffering much visible damage. However, when it came to the head height drop, iPhone X’s glass cracked while iPhone Xs Max had some ugly scratches. Only the iPhone Xs survived this drop. Moving on to the 10 feet drop, iPhone X suffered additional damage while Xs Max’s glass cracked from the upper left corner. iPhone Xs amazingly survived again! In another durability test conducted by SquareTrade as mentioned by Macrumors, when dropped face down from a 6 feet height, the iPhone Xs Max suffered hairline cracks and loose glass but still had a fairly usable display. The Vice President Global Creative Director, Jason Siciliano of SquareTrade says:

"We were super impressed with the iPhone XS Max, which is much stronger than its discontinued predecessor, the iPhone X. However, as with the iPhone X, our tests show the all-glass design of the iPhone XS and XS Max make them highly susceptible to cracking, particularly from drops, the most common cause of damage

Although, the iPhone Xs Max survived some severe drops with minimal damage, this doesn’t exactly prove Apple’s claim about the durability of the glass used on its devices. In reality, if you encounter an accident and drop your iPhone, several variables are involved behind the drop, including the speed and angle of the drop, how the iPhone hits the ground, the type of ground that the iPhone has contact with, other external forces that may play a role and much more. Whether or not Apple’s “most durable glass in the world” claim holds true is hard to confirm, as the reality is far different from the arbitrary drop tests. However, from the many tests conducted and the experiences of customers, it would be fair to say that the iPhone Xs Max is durable and tough to break under most conditions, but this doesn’t mean that it is completely unbreakable or shatterproof.

How is iPhone XS Max Superior to iPhone XS?

Being the costliest among the iPhone X series, whether or not it is worth the money is a question you may ask yourself before purchasing this product. The iPhone Xs Max’s many superior features certainly make it a valuable investment in comparison to the other models. Being protective is one area where this model excels against the other iPhone X series models. As mentioned earlier, the iPhone Xs Max experienced hairline cracks along with a loose glass but fairly functionable display after it was subjected to a 6- feet drop facing down in a drop test conducted by SquareTrade. Meanwhile, the iPhone XS suffered greater damage with a shattered and malfunctioning display. Moreover, after a pressure-based bend test by SquareTrade, the iPhone Xs cracked at 250 pounds with a completely damaged display, whereas the iPhone Xs Max still survived with hairline cracks and scratches featuring a loose glass display. Upon conducting all the drop tests, SquareTrade assigned a “Breakability Score” to each iPhone and iPhone Xs Max stood out to be a more strong, and durable device than the iPhone Xs. With a breakability score of 70, iPhone Xs Max was classified as a ‘medium risk’ device that is less likely to break under extreme impact situations as compared to the ‘high risk’ iPhone Xs with a breakability score of 86 as classified by SquareTrade’s breakability score chart. Several factors are considered by SquareTrade to calculate this breakability score, including the face down drop, back down drop, side drop, bendability test, tumble test, materials, and repairability scores. Aside from being highly protective, the iPhone Xs Max also exceeds in few of its specs and design features. As the name speaks for itself, the iPhone Xs Max is 0.7 inches bigger in size than iPhone Xs. Yes, that makes the iPhone Xs Max the biggest phone amongst all the other iPhone models, but the good thing is that it doesn’t make it that much heavier than the iPhone X considering its large size. If you look closely, the iPhone Xs Max is very identical to the iPhone 8 Plus. So, if you own an iPhone 8 Plus or were even slightly tempted to buy one in the past, the iPhone Xs Max would definitely be a perfect upgrade for you! What’s even more spectacular is that the iPhone Xs Max stores the largest battery providing it a greater battery life than the iPhone Xs. Upon conducting the web surfing test, the iPhone Xs Max lasted for around 10 hours and 38 minutes, while the iPhone Xs only lasted for 9 hours and 41 minutes.
