Apple Watch 2 Waterproof

Is the Apple Watch Series 2 Waterproof?

It is a common misconception that waterproof and water-resistant mean basically the same thing; but these two concepts are very different from one another and should not be swapped or used as synonyms. A waterproof material or product is able to provide sustained protection from water for a significant period of time. A water-resistant material or product can prevent water penetration to a certain level. It is not completely impervious to water penetration.

The first generation Apple Watch, or Apple Watch Series 1, are only splash and water resistant. It can survive getting splashed on from washing your hands but Apple advises against submerging the Apple Watch Series 1. On the other hand, The Series 2, Series 3 and Series 4 Apple Watch models have an ISO rating of 22810:2010. This means that they are designed to withstand water at up to 50 meters (164 feet) of depth and may be used while swimming in a swimming pool or ocean. However, it is advised that these newer Apple Watch models be used for shallow depth water activities only. Apple Watch Series 2, Apple Watch Series 3, and Apple Watch Series 4 should not be used for scuba diving. Also, they are not recommended to be used in activities that involve high velocity water like water skiing.

Showering with Apple Watch Series 2, Apple Watch Series 3, and Apple Watch Series 4 is okay. However, Apple does warn against exposing the Apple Watch to soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, perfumes, bug repellent, sunscreen, hair dye, oil, acids or acidic foods, detergent and other chemicals. These can negatively affect water seals and acoustic membranes of the Apple watch. If the Apple Watch comes in contact with anything other than fresh water, it should be cleaned with fresh water and dried with a lint-free cloth.

Water resistance is not a permanent condition and may diminish over time. When this happens, the Apple Watch cannot be rechecked or re-sealed for water resistance. A number of things can affect the water resistance of your Apple Watch aside from being exposed to chemicals and high velocity water. Dropping the Apple Watch or subjecting it to other impacts can negatively affect its water resistance, too. As well as wearing the Apple Watch in the sauna or steam room, as the heat can also impact the longevity of its water resistance. These instances should be avoided to prevent water damage.

Remember to clean and dry your Apple Watch, the band, and your skin after a workout or heavy sweating. After swimming in salt water, gently rinse your Apple Watch with warm tap water. Always dry your Apple Watch and the band thoroughly. Do not use heat, compressed air, or sprays. If your Apple Watch gets wet with fresh water, simply wipe it with a non-abrasive, lint-free cloth.

If the speaker sounds of your Apple Watch gets muffled after getting wet, do not insert anything into the openings (microphone or speaker ports) and do not shake the watch in attempt to remove water. Charging your Apple Watch overnight may speed up evaporation.

Apple also developed a Water Lock system for the Apple Watch Series 2 and the later models. You can choose Pool Swim or Open Water Swim. When your swimming workout starts, the screen automatically locks to prevent accidental taps from water droplets. When you are done with your swim workout, to disable Water Lock, you'll need to turn the Digital Crown on your watch until you begin to hear a series of beeps. The noise emitted from the speaker is used to eject any water inside the cavity.

It is also important to note that not all watch bands are appropriate for water use. The stainless steel and leather bands are not water resistant and should not be exposed to liquids. Sports bands which are made of silicone or nylon can be used in water.
